Toddler Sweater Continued

So I have been making steady progress on the sweater. So far it has been easy knitting and the pattern is very easy to read, even to me a novice when it comes to patterns. I am have completed the back panel and am 99% done the front panel. I have, however, run into a small bump in the road.

Turns out my son's head (being gigantic like it is) will most likely NOT fit through the head hole. I think I have come up with a semi easy solution for this after contemplating about it all day. I think I will sew up only a little more than half of the shoulder seam on either side and then put a button on each side of the neck. I am now stuck with this project because the panels need to be blocked so that I can then properly line them up to see where to put the buttons, then and only then can I figure out how much longer to make that bit and where I would then knit in the button hole (which I have never done before). Now obviously if anyone has any suggestions I am very open to them.

Now after I solve this problem I can move on to knitting the sleeves. I would do that now but both skeins of yarn are currently in use, one on each shoulder. Since I am bad at judging measurements I am tentative to cut the yarn because knowing me it wouldn't be long enough. I hope to do the blocking tomorrow during which I will take a picture of both panels to post so everyone can see my beautiful work :)

Good thought on the watermelon- head solution. Going to use this plan on the next thing I knit for egg-head here...I think button holes are just YO then K2Tog...
